Full Name: Penelope Creighton-Ward
Nationality: British
Organization: International Rescue
Occupation Agent

Creator: Gerry Anderson, Sylvia Anderson
Time Span: 1965 - 2020

ABOUT THE SERIES

Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward is a freelance agent.

The organization listed above with which she is affiliated, International Rescue (IR) run by the Tracy family, will be one she will have a good amount of interaction with and it is understandable that she is considered the London representative for the secretive rescue service. That is not the only group for whom she will work, though. The United Secret Service, intelligence arm of the prevailing global government, makes frequent use of her skills though sometimes in a subdued manner.

The primary timeframe for the activities of Lady Penelope as well as the International Rescue team known better as the Thunderbirds is one hundred years in the future of the time they were presented to us - namely starting in the year 2065. The majority of the countries have banded together into a confederation (my term, not theirs) called the World Government, complete with its own Secret Service. There is mostly peace around the planet but there are a few 'rogue' nations, particularly but not limited to an Eastern European country called Bereznik, which find themself chafing and out to cause trouble. Lady Penelope will find herself going up against their operatives quite a few times in the numerous non-IR adventures.

Also plaguing the safety of everyone are several super-criminals, people with enormous budgets and manpower and, most dangerous of all, ambition. The two more infamous of these are the Hood, a bald headed super-villain who is constantly out to steal technology from the Tracy's and destroy IR in the process. Since Lady P, as some of the Tracy sons refer to her, is devoted to IR, she will find herself fighting the Hood several times.

Secondly, though he shows up well before the Hood, there is Mr. Steelman, an archnemesis who is an inventing genius who has created numerous series of robots to act as his primary henchmen. Some of these automatons are basically walking boxes with vaguely humanoid shapes (deadly though) and some are sophisticated enough to pass as normal humans. Mr. Steelman is largely out for money - he wants to be the richest man around which is odd because to build the things he does to do the things he does, he has to be extremely rich already but apparently he wants it all. One interesting feature about the recurring battles between he/his robots and Lady Penelope is that while he watches her often via his minions, she has no idea what he looks like.

When she is not getting involved in international intrigue or trying to stop super-crooks from being extra naughty, Lady Penelope is the epitome of the rich and famous. In fact, she makes it a point to promote herself as such largely to have a cover for her clandestine work. If she shows up at a gala in a far-away city, it is often with cameras flashing and the press asking for interviews - then when she slips away, she can go after whatever badnik is up to no good in that same city.

Penelope is rich. She has inherited the immense Creighton-Ward fortune which includes one very impressive mansion and grounds as well as her own huge yacht and sleek jet aircraft at hand to fly her off to wherever she feels she is needed. Her father was a successful businessman until the British government asked him to act as their ambassador to India (and likely other places). As an adolescent, Penelope will spend a good deal of time in foreign countries with him as well as often being sent to boarding schools. This combination of influences will make her quite mature and wise for someone as young as she is often portrayed to be. Toss in considerable training in gymnastics and the martial arts, plus fencing and marksmanship, and you have a very capable, deadly opponent.

And then there is Parker. Aloysius 'Nosey' Parker (that nickname comes without a doubt from his prominent proboscis) is a man likely in his late forties or early fifties who has spent most of his adult life engaged in criminal activities. Parker likes to crack safes and he is very good at it. He is also a highly skilled second-story man and knows his way around the illicit gem trade as well. He has spent the odd year or two behind bars for his actions but this has led to him being quite crafty so as to lessen the chance of going back inside.  Parker's association with Lady Penelope comes about when we first meet both of them as she sets him up as a test of his skills. She needs someone with his abilities and talents and so she arranges a 'meeting' and makes him an offer he would be foolish to refuse. Before he knows it, he is her personal butler and chauffeur and confidant. The friendship and loyalty they quickly acquire for each other makes them a terrific partnership - Lady Penelope being the senior here though Parker is far older than she.

In addition to the yacht and the airplanes already mentioned, Lady Penelope has a very unusual and quite deadly pink Rolls Royce known as FAB-1. In addition to a good number of intriguing gadgets and doo-dads, including oil slick ability, a laser beam, machine-guns in the grillwork, and radar, the vehicle is unique as it has two sets of front tires! Quite strange looking. Even cooler, though, IMHO, is its ability to turn into a boat. Way cool!

Good Lines:
- Said by an interrogator of Lady Penelope, "[She] looks too innocent to be a spy."

According to Wikipedia: "Thunderbirds is a British science fiction television series created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, filmed by their production company AP Films (APF) and distributed by ITC Entertainment. It was filmed between 1964 and 1966 using a form of electronic marionette puppetry called "Supermarionation" combined with scale model special effects sequences. Two series, totaling 32 fifty-minute episodes, were made; production ended with the sixth episode of the second series after Lew Grade, APF's financial backer, failed in his efforts to sell the programme to US network television."

MY COMMENTS

I have such interesting memories of Lady Penelope and her friends, the Tracy's of Thunderbirds fame. I remember vaguely as a new teenager seeing the television show and finding myself not a fan of the puppetry method of storytelling. At various times over the ensuing decades I would see repeats of the shows and finding myself somewhat creeped out by these mechanized puppets - I mean, they were obviously not cartoons and obviously not live-action and they looked both real and fake at the same time. I was not ever, I admit, paying any attention to the incredible detail the Andersons and company were putting into their productions. It was ... impressive. Even if the puppets did sort of make me uneasy (this is long before evil dolls like Chucky came along).

Leap ahead a whole lot of years and find me studying anything I could for this entry, including reading the stories put out about Lady Penelope and Parker and I was impressed! I liked the characters and enjoyed the adventures and had fun looking for more. I watched several subsequent iterations to the Thunderbirds adventure series to catch any glimpse I could of Lady P and was quite impressed with the most recent CGI version of tales.

I then went back to watch a couple of the original television episodes and found I was ... em ... impressed with what was produced while still being a little creeped out by the puppets. Odd, that!
