Full Name: Nelson Lord
Series Name: Nelson Lord T.I.G.E.R. Agent
Nationality: British
Organization: T.I.G.E.R.
Occupation Agent

Creator: Unknown
Time Span: 1965 - 1969

ABOUT THE SERIES

Nelson Lord is an agent with T.I.G.E.R.

That acronym stands for "The International Group for Eliminating Revolution". It is a "top-secret crime-smashing organization [and] from the hidden headquarters, highly trained and superbly equipped secret agents were sent to trouble spots throughout the world ..."

That 'hidden' part is demonstrated in the first recorded adventure as we find Lord entering the clandestine location by go to "a small waxworks museum in London". This establishment enjoys the services of a uniformed doorman who greets Lord by name. An advertisement placard out front promises visiting tourists "Great historical events and leaders, sports stars, TV-film-stage celebrities" and exhorts them, "Don't miss the chamber of horrors!". It is that last set of displays that Lord will go to for turning the large crank on the Rack opens a secret door to the headquarters.

As indicated by the name of the organization, the purpose of it and the apparently large number of agents in the field is to maintain the status quo, keeping existing governments from being overthrown resulting in instability. Exactly who is funding this effort is not disclosed. Those most definitely behind the majority of the would-be rebellions, and therefore the entity that TIGER is going after the most, is the evil organization, the "Agents of Terror And Chaos" (A.T.A.C.).

A.T.A.C. is an interesting international criminal cartel dedicated to spreading unrest and dissatisfaction to all nations of the world, trying always to bring down existing governments while also making sure they turn a nice profit doing so. A.T.A.C. has headquarters in many key spots on the globe, most of which seem to be known by T.I.G.E.R.

Assisting Lord to complete his many missions, especially in the second half of the recorded adventures, is an interesting individual. Originally the lead scientist creating a whole lot of nifty gadgets for Lord to help him is Professor Decimal, known as "Dizzy". And accompanying him on a couple of the early hair-raising assignments is the diminutive explosives expert, Henry Small. Soon, though, Dizzy disappears and Small becomes the highly inventive fellow who is coming up with amazing doo-dads and what-nots. Some of these will prove quite useful in Lord's fights with A.T.A.C. A couple others, well, not so much.

Starting in 1952, Fleetway Publications produced a weekly periodical aimed at teenagers though interesting enough to appeal to adults. It was named Lion and it would last for more than two decades, racking up 1,156 issues.

It would host an interesting and entertaining selection of repeat characters. Many would have lengthy adventures told in serial format of 2 or 3 pages each issue while others would have complete stories told in just one issue though again usually limited to 3 pages.

The adventures of Nelson Lord started in issue #576 and ran consecutively with the probable exception of #618.

Each of the adventures were solo issue ones of 3 pages each except for a trio of extended stories. Adventure #34 had 2 pages each in 8 issues. Adventure #36 was 2 pages in 7 issues. Adventure #37 had 2 pages each in 6 issues. From then on, the remaining 30 adventures were all 2.5 to 3 pages in length.

The final "regular" season story came out in June of 1967 after which Nelson Lord went away except for a special adventure in sister publication Hurricane Annual 1970 which had a 5-page tale.

MY COMMENTS

There should be no doubt in any reader's mind, assuming that person has more than a passing familiarity with television's Napoleon Solo and the Man From U.N.C.L.E. that this series is an homage to Solo. Or a bloody ripoff! Giving the doubt benefit here, let's go with the former, albeit with a hearty side wink.

When it comes to fighting the agents of his arch-nemesis, A.T.A.C., Lord is as resourceful and intrepid as Solo. Because he was having his stories told in a publication meant for younger audiences, Lord does not have the chances to enjoy the company of the fairer sex that Solo had. But for fighting abilities and innovative schemes and exciting stunts, the two are like brothers.

Each of the five dozen plus stories are quick, fun adventures. I can see why he lasted a while.
