Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, Warren Murphy worked as a journalist for several years. He joined with Richard Sapir to create an action character named Remo Williams in 1963 but that series did not find a home until the success of The Executioner had the publisher looking for more and thus was started the highly successful Destroyer series.
