William 'Will' Kane is an adventurer.
That is the best way I can think of to describe his activities which we are allowed to follow.
When we first meet him, he works in New York City as a 'fixer' for a high-priced lawyer named Toni Marcelle, doing a lot of things a private investigator would do, though Kane does not has such a license, and a few things most wouldn't. Kane does draw the line on some things, such as killing. As we encounter him, he is still keeping his promise to himself made a few years before when he returned from the Vietnam War to not kill again. Unfortunately for him, he will not be able to keep it that way.
In his current line of work, Kane would definitely not qualify for membership in this compendium. For the kind of work he routinely was ordered to do during the Vietnam days when he was a proud member of the elite Green Berets, he definitely earned a spot since a lot of the super secret assignments he was handed came from the CIA. And now, years later, he will regrettably find that once his name is brought to their attention, people in Langley will recall just how good, and how deadly, he had been. They will come knocking on his door more than once to make use of that talent and experience.
Kane is described as six feet, lean, with an angular face smeared by two days of not shaving (when we meet) and topped with thick, black hair, poorly cut and not recently combed. Thirty-two hard years had sprinkled some gray in the hair and chiseled lines in his face. His eyes were green, a gift from his father's side of the family. As we learn more about him, we will find that he has to deal with two mental conditions. The first is PTSD from the horrific things thrown at him during the war. The second is that he has undiagnosed Asperger's, a high functioning autistic, "like a number of exceptional people, especially in the arts. Except his art is death and he is very, very good at it".
Good Lines:
- A comment about a junkie about to cause trouble, "A muscle on the left side of his face danced to the dark beat of his subconscious".
