Kirkland Finn is an officer in the British SAS.
36 years of age, Finn "had been in Military service since his teens, working his way up through the ranks arriving at his current rank of Captain in the 22nd Special Air Service, part of the British Army. Finn's sixteen-man unit specialised in covert operations including surveillance, eliminating terrorist groups, recovering hostages, and supporting other military units."
That alone might have qualified him for membership in this compendium but it becomes a moot point when we watch him seconded to MI6 and working with other intelligence agencies.
We learn a good deal about the man in the opening section of our introduction to him. Extremely telling is: "Sometimes Finn wore a uniform, sometimes he was undercover in civilian clothes, but regardless, he always focused on the job, like a machine tuned to perform at its best. To the UK government Finn was a highly trained asset, skilled in combat, intelligent with tactics, dependable to the last, and when the day came, expendable." Also important is: "Finn had seen his fair share of combat and, when required, had killed, using a wide range of weapons including his bare hands. He was not proud of everything he had done while in the military but it was his job. They gave him orders and he carried them out. No questions asked."
Within his squad, Finn is very much a team player but outside the unit, he far prefers to work alone; no one is responsible for him and even better, he is responsible for no one but himself. Finn is a loner at heart; "it was the life he chose for himself". Other than a sister, Finn had no other family, his parents dying in a boating accident while vacationing in Cyprus and drinking far too much. Finn was twelve at the time and "forced to grow up fast, taking responsibility for his younger, four-year-old sister". His life afterwards was not bad but when he was old enough to join the military, he did so quickly and without reservation. He had had several lady friends over the years but none had caught hold.
Several of the adventures we have with Finn involve working closely with an MI6 agent named Mac - what his full name might be is irrelevant. Mac enjoys working with Finn because of Finn's penchant for getting the job done quickly and correctly, though not always cleanly. And Finn gets along fine with Mac, even not so jokingly commenting that Mac comes calling when "you want me to do something that you can deny later".
