Born in Chicago, Jakes began his professional writing career while in college selling short stories to the pulps in the 50's. In the 60's he expanded his repertoire with science fiction and heroic fantasy, crafting the Brak the Barbarian tales. It was in the 70's, however, that his creative genius shown best with his Kent Family series and the North and South Trilogy.
