Full Name: Lancelot Link
Nationality: American
Organization: A.P.E.
Occupation Agent

Creator: Stan Burns, Mike Marmer
Time Span: 1970 - 1973

ABOUT THE SERIES

Lancelot 'Lance' Link is an agent for A.P.E.

That acronym stands for the Agency to Prevent Evil, a pretty noble albeit impossible goal. It is run by a tough, no-nonsense fellow named Commander Darwin, a person who has been around the block a time or three and has the gray hair and mustache to prove it.

Its mission, obviously, is to aid via espionage and counter-espionage the country but this almost exclusively seems to mean combating its Number One nemesis, the Criminal Headquarters for Underworld Master Play, or C.H.U.M.P. Leading this nefarious organization is the infamous Baron von Butcher who, though he is a despicable individual based on his leading a despicable group, is still a natty dresser. Considering his name, it is no surprise he speaks with a German accent

Assisting the Baron to stay on top of C.H.U.M.P. is his chauffeur and body guard and key enforcer, Creto, a fellow who just looks mean before he says or does anything. On the other hand, a lady who is the epitome of allure and seduction, though sadly with a leaning towards the dark side of life, is The Dragon Woman, no other name given for her. Also of note for this gang are the Oriental super-spy Wang Fu, the Arabic assassin Ali Assa Seen, and the evil genius and inventor Dr. Strangemind.

Fighting on the side of A.P.E. is the hero of this series, the always cool and level-headed Lance Link. Working constantly with him as his right-hand and probable love interest is the lovely platinum-blond Mata Hairi.

When not actively pursuing C.H.U.M.P., the agents of A.P.E. use as their cover being in a rock band called the Evolution Revolution, comprised of Lance as lead guitar and singer, Mata as singer and tamborine, Blackie on drums, and someone whose name I did not catch on the keyboard.

The above information is largely summarized in the theme song for this series:

Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp!

He stands for justice. He has no fear.

He's the agent to call when trouble is near.

Lance Link, ya gotta come through.

Everybody at APE is countin' on you!

Here's Marta Hairi, an agent and friend.

She sticks by his side right to the end.

Darwin is the leader on the side of good.

He traps CHUMP agents like a good ape should.

Lance Link, whatcha gonna do?

You've gotta stop CHUMP now. It's up to you.

Here's Baron Von Butcher. You better beware.

He's evil and he's cunning and he don't play fair.

He's got an evil chauffer. Creto's his name.

Dragon Woman's lovely, but she's wicked all the same!

Lance Link, whatcha gonna do

When mad Dr.Strangemind comes up to you?

There's Ali Assassin, Wicked Wang Foo

And the Duchess whose looks can really fool you.

Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp!

He stands for justice, he has no fear,

He's the agent to call when trouble is near.

Lance Link, whatcha gonna do?

Oh, by the way, in case there is any confusions here, each of the players in the series, whether they are on the side of A.P.E. or C.H.U.M.P., are chimpanzees.

MY COMMENTS

It has been over a decade since someone wrote asking why I did not have Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp on the site. I remember just looking at the question for a while sort of pondering the seriousness and then smiling because while I was not yet adding television-only series into the compendium (at the time there had to be at least one printed adventure to qualify) I was certain I would one day find time to add it. It is just who I am.

Well, that day has come and after having watched an episode to "refresh my memory" (as if I could ever forget it), I present it now.

I did not see the show when it first aired. I had just gotten out of basic training in the Navy and was finding a place to live while stationed in D.C. to attend the Defense Language Institute before being assigned to the NSA. I was kind of busy.

Which was a shame because the show aired on Saturday mornings so sitting around drinking stale beer and eating cold pizza left over from the night before while watching this "interesting" series might have been something I would do, if I had known about it, which I did not.

Now at my age, well, one episode was enough.
