ABOUT THE SERIES

Jonathan Skul is an agent for C.O.B.R.A.

There are times when the rules of engagement that govern the operations of agencies like the FBI, CIA, DIA, and NSA prevent their highly trained agents from accomplishing things that need done. For those rare moments, the problem is sure to be sent to C.O.B.R.A.

The "Very Highest Authority" in the United States directed the creation of C.O.B.R.A., Counter-Subversion Operations Bureau of Resistance and Action. Working with five top men of the NSA, sworn to secrecy, he authorized the creation of the Bureau and assigned Jonas Barron to head it. The department is unknown to the other intelligence agencies of the government to allow total freedom of operation within the confines of its charter.

Being highly secret, the Bureau is understandably small but it still possesses a significant number of dedicated agents, 250 to be exact. There are 165 males, working in the Eagle group, and 85 women called "Doves".

The action in the C.O.B.R.A. series is intense and almost non-stop. Joseph Rosenberger adds to this mayhem with considerable emphasis on the gritty details of the weaponry and ammunition. When agent Skul shoots a bad guy, it isn't just recorded that the man was shot but what weapon was used, the type of bullet the gun expelled, the force with which the man was hit and the resulting damage to the man's body. If you are a military grognard, it might be thought impressive. Otherwise, it can be a bit much.

Skul is one of the two main agents in the series, He is a former Green Beret who saw considerable action in Vietnam before moving to the CIA where his slim, athletic body showed it contained an intelligent brain able to speak 8 languages fluently. He was a star agent for Langley until an altercation caused him to be forced out, able to be grabbed by Barron immediately.

The other agent, the lead Dove assigned to work in Skul's group, is the beautiful red-headed Deborah Miles, luscious as well as vicious when she had to be, she could seduce or out-think most of the males who crossed her path.

There are others in the group that Skul leads but it is Skul and Miles that dominate the group and the series.

MY COMMENTS

The action in this series is considerable. It and the sex is intense, leaving little room for delving too much into the thinking of the characters beyond a he-needs-killing or two. That, of course, is a bit harsh. For pure escapism into action, this series is quite good.

The two main characters start off not liking each other but that quickly changes as each see his/her life saved by the other and sees the other is a worthy colleague. This is done in a stereotypical manner but then stereotypes exist because they are "normal" and "believable" which sums up this series as well.

I liked the books. I did not expect much and do not believe I got more than I expected but they were fun.
