ABOUT THE SERIES

Section 20 is a division of MI6.

It is defined as "a secretive branch of the British Secret Intelligence Service who operate several high risk, priority mission around the world [Wikipedia]". According to the Strike Back wiki, "Section 20 was originally formed as part of the 'Section Initiative' within the British military intelligence establishment. The unit was designed to be able to travel around the world covertly neutralising terrorist threats against the United Kingdom and its allies, able to mobilise immediately and have their mobile command station (known as "The Crib") up in a matter of hours. The nature of the unit and its secrecy also allowed the British Government to retain a certain level of plausible deniability should an operation abroad turn bad".

When we are first introduced to this department, it was closely watched and directed by the leadership in Vauxhall Cross but as time progresses, the unit becomes a tad more autonomous whose governing body seems to be in Whitehall though whether that means MI5 or MoD is uncertain.

For all its connection to MI6 and possibly MI5, those comprising the teams of Section 20 are all highly experienced members of the British military, primarily but not exclusively the Army. Additionally for reasons not really explained, several Yanks have been made part of the team as has at least one Aussie soldier from Down Under. The missions that Section 20 members will be given will be a combination of military action (a large part) and clandestine work (smaller but very important).

We will be around to see that the roster of membership in Section 20 will change over the years of our monitoring. A couple of these changes will come from the deaths of operatives while some will be because of other reasons such as physical and mental injuries. Two major players will disappear when forces from other countries decide to try to eliminate them!

Section 20 has a decent number of personnel working for it. Key among those (IMHO) are:

John Porter - former SAS operative, brought into Section 20 because he knows one of the key players in a terrorist organization the team is hunting.
Hugh Collinson - former British Army, the real reason for Porter's being essentially kicked out of the SAS, he would become the head of Section 20 for a time.
Michael Stonebridge - former Royal Marine Commando and later SBS operative, he was personally picked by the sitting head of Section 20 to be a field leader.
Damien Scott - former U.S. Army and Delta Force, when he began to question the existence of WMDs in Iraq, he was framed with drug possession and kicked out. He was brought into Section 20 because it was thought he could identify the terrorist leader they were after at the time.
Samuel Wyatt - former JSOC operator, very much a loner who does not like teams, he is recruited by a Section 20 director who knew how effective Wyatt can be.
'Mac' McAllister - former UK Special Forces, he was about to be court-martialed for hitting a superior officer but then was saved by Section 20 to work for them.
Gracie Novin - former lance corporal in the Australian Army, she became a member of Section 20 when she was needed to help rescue two other members. She is sarcastic and snippy, especially to authority, but more than holds her own in a scrape.

There are, as said, a good number more people in Section 20 and some of them play major roles in that organization but we are shown repeated that being in an organization going after terrorists is a very dangerous, sometimes fatally so, life of work.

The highly experienced - both as a combat vet and as a writer of exciting action adventures - Chris Ryan penned a terrific thriller entitled Strike Back which was published in 2007. A couple of years after it came out, it was optioned for a television show which would have the same name.

It is quite common in the entertainment business that the transition from page to screen can an interesting one in that the storyline of the book is fascinating enough to make people pay a good deal of money (well, to me, anyways) to have the right to convert that story to the screen. Having secured those rights, it then becomes common to hire other writers and a director who far too often then proceed to change that terrific storyline into something completely different. Change for the better or the worse, that depends, but definitely change it enough to hardly recognize the finished product from the original. Just look at any James Bond movie for further proof. Surprisingly, IMHO, in this case, the basic concept for the adventure did stick around, at least for a while.

In the [then] standalone book, John Porter was the main character. In the television show, he was as well. The timeframe changes a wee bit to make it more topical but it is Porter who heads the team from MI6 to rescue a journalist. And the real villain of the adventure, Collinson, was a nasty piece of work in both the book and the TV show. One significant change was that who Porter and people work for in the television show would be altered from MI6 to a more secretive division of British Intelligence called Section 20. Still, seeing a synopsis of both the book and that first season, most would agree it was the same story.

But, when it was decided that the six-part adventure was liked and viewed  well enough to warrant bringing people back for another romp, things get changed a while lot. The reason was a pretty good one, to give them credit. It seems the lead actor who was playing John Porter, Richard Armitage, had been contractually obligated to a little project called The Hobbit. He was not going to be available for the next season so ... what to do!

Well, kill him off in the opening section of that second season. Find someone to replace him. The show must go on! And that is why the television version of Strike Back gets its own entry; there would be 8 seasons of Strike Back with [no longer main character] John Porter only being in one of them.

Even as the first season of 6 episodes was being aired, the ink was drying on the contract for a second season. Sky One had been the power and money behind that season but now American Cinemax was interested so it forked over money to join the franchise and Season 2 was set to go. Shortly afterwards, Season 3 was green-lit. As soon as that one had finished being shown, Sky One and Cinemax agreed to a Season 4. A few months after 4 ended, the franchise was told that a 5th and final season was okayed, airing in 2015.

A year or so would go by before it was decided, in late 2016, to have the final be not so final and a Season 6 was decided, coming out in Fall of 2017. Similarly, at the end of that year, contracts were signed for Season 7 to be done; the shows came out in January of 2019. And again, even as the numbers for viewership for that were being tabulated, a Season 8 was okayed. This would be the actual final season.

Each of these seasons consisted of various episodes but each season had one main plotline to govern it, with a myriad of side-plots to enhance the story. As a result, I have listed the entries by Season, not individual episode.
