Kate Ross is an agent with the CIA.
An expert in Middle East terror largely in part to one unusual aspect of her upbringing, Ross was on a solid career track until one of her best contacts in that region was uncovered and murdered. The blowback was strong and she was recalled to Langley. Throw in the subsequent death of her beloved mother and Ross was having a difficult time.
That is when she is given a second chance by her boss and mentor when he proposed an unusual project, one that the higher-ups thought was a terrific idea but which was having troubles finding a trained and experienced field agent to lead it. The general concept was secretly smirked at by many offered the position and rejected by all, except Ross who knew two things of importance. First, it was indeed a bone offered to redeem her status. Second, she actually thought it a very good idea.
That idea was U-Tap, Ross's pet name for the project. It was an abbreviation for the term "untapped source" and it consisted of the idea of using several middle-aged female non-field operative as a cohesive team. The concept grew from the realization that terrorists were using mothers and small children to further their objectives and combating those was something that most field agents were unprepared for. Take three experienced moms, each with her own skillsets, such as psychology, computer science, and criminology, and use them to fight this new terrorist strategy. It was a crazy idea that Ross thought was worth a try.
The three mothers are Gina, Denise, and Eva, and each has her own unique and very interesting backstory to complement Ross's.
Back on Ross, she is a 31-year old single woman who secretly works diligently gathering facts about how her source was betrayed, all mounted on the walls of her spare bedroom in what she admits is her "crazy room". Ross is also obsessed with physical fitness and spends a great deal of time exercising, not only because it is vital for survival in her job but also, as she tells us at the beginning of the first recorded adventure, it "allows me to eat ice cream at the end of a long day. I have a freezer full of rocky road."
