Jake Stone is an agent with an unnamed American Intelligence agency.
The overall names for these adventures is the Jake Stone Files and the reason is clear - he is the one who narrates the activities and lets us know what is going on. But considering that he is not the only operative in the family and that his wife, Gloria, has a whole lot of important duties herself and when they are forced to tell their grown daughter about their very interesting careers taking place while she was growing up, I might have thought that the Stone Family Files would have been a good name. Oh, well, as Gloria tells Jake when they do finally tell daughter Gabby their secret and he opines he does like to think of himself "in a Bond, James Bond, sort of way", "shut up, you old fart!"
Gloria's explanation of their jobs back then was that they were "not spies. We were more what they call field agents. We would get assigned to hotspots in various countries around the world. Our jobs changed based on the assignment. Sometimes we were required to neutralize some bad guys and help stop an insurrection in a friendly country. Or we might be required to prevent the sale of illegal arms to terrorists. On other occasions, we would observe and report on local conditions during tense intergovernmental negotiations."
When Gabby quickly catches on to what they were saying and realizes that "neutralize some bad guys" meant having to kill them, Jake assured her that "they were all nasty people". And when she talks about their teaching her "there are always options other than violence", Gloria agrees but adds "sometime a more direct approach may be appropriate when you've tried all other options and failed". The two tell now adult Gabby they had kept the truth from her because "we're bound by Home Land Security to keep our identities and previous work secret", not to mention you do not tell a child such information or before too long, every other girl on the soccer team you help coach would know the truth - though whether they would believe it of the woman who just baked them cookies would be debatable.
Both Jake and Gloria Stone are well past normal field agent age when we first meet them. Jake Stone describes himself this way: "At six foot, one inch tall, I still carried myself well for a guy my age. My lean, fit body had held up well for a sixty-year-old, even though the last five years of retirement had added a few unwanted pounds. My lightly flecked salt and pepper hair seemed to move more toward the salt end of the aging curve every day, but there was still a hint of ginger red in my mustache." Gloria is also still in pretty good shape as we will see a time or two when circumstances require action. And both are a lot of fun watching them show they still have what it takes to survive in the field.
