Kelsey, Becca, and Leo are agents with the CCSC.
That sounds so cool and almost official like, except that the acronym stands for the Curious Cats Spy Club and these operatives are really just a team of students with a mission! They are not real spies, as in belong to a government agency with badges or id cards. They are more freelancers though they don't really charge for what they do; they do it because they feel they need to. Besides, they're kids!
The youngsters making up this self-named organization are all attendees of the Helen Corning Middle School in a town named Sun Flower. "No one at school knows that Kelsey, Becca, and Leo are secretly friends. They have nothing in common - until they rescue three kittens (and sort of save a zorse) and form a club to help animals through volunteering, spying, and solving mysteries."
The narrator of the adventure is Kelsey Case, the youngest of four children in her family. She is known as the "Spy Specialist". She had learned long ago that at home her choices were either yelling the loudest or just listening and she chose the latter; this results in her natural inclination to not talk much. It did give her the reason to learn to lip read. She has slightly wavy golden-brown hair that goes a bit beyond her shoulders. "Kids just don't notice me, which is a good thing since I want to be a spy."
Becca Morales is the other co-founder of the team. She has pink streaks in her otherwise black hair and a dusky complexion. Morales is described as "the nicest and most liked girl at school". She works part time at the Wild Oaks animal rescue; she is the "Animal Expert" in the group.
Leo Polanski is the sole boy in the trio, a fellow with light brown hair cut fairly short. He is the "Covert Technology Strategist" of the team for good reason - if you ever saw Polanski, a short skinny kid, you would also almost certainly see a computer tablet in his hands; tapping on it "seems to be his only sport". When we meet him, he is wearing "formal slacks with a black vest over a white long-sleeved buttoned shirt on a Saturday morning".
