ABOUT THE SERIES

Santa Claus is a spymaster with the SSSN.

That is the premise behind the four recorded adventures we have of him and his newest member of the Secret Super Spy Network, a youngster named Paul Jenkins, age 8. In fact considering that each of these tales have Jenkins as its primary operative, it might have been better to list him as the 'star' and not Santa Claus; of course when you have the big guy with red coat and the long white beard on stage, can anyone else really be called the star?

A question is asked in the synopsis for each of the stories: Where is Santa Claus and what does he do when he's not delivering presents? The answer to that is given right afterward - he's a Super Spy!

Considering the famous sound about his coming to town pretty much tells that without saying it right out. He knows if you are sleeping or awake and he knows if you've been bad or good - considering this is for more than a billion children around the world, that's an impressive intelligene system!

But now back to Jenkins and his new membership in the SSSN. It comes to him via a present he has been wishing for a long time, a watch; not "just any old watch, it was a top-secret Super Spy watch". He got it because each Christman, "Santa picked one boy or girl in every town to join" the SSSN. This year in the town of Princeville, that chosen one is Jenkins. For the first few months at his new post, Jenkins was pretty much stuck with just watching other kids and noting the nide ones and the naughty ones and to tell the truth was getting kind of bored with it all. Then his watch chimed, a secret code message pops up on it (which did not please Jenkins because he is not very good with codes) and the next thing he knew, a sleigh with reindeer driven by a little elf was in his backyard. Ervin the Elf lets him know that Santa needs him at the North Pole right away.

And that is the start of the real adventures of Santa and one of his agents, Jenkins. Well, there is also 7-year-old Emily Swanson, another new Super Spy member. Can't forget her, especially since she will prove to be of great help to Jenkins when he needs it - and he needs it a bunch.

MY COMMENTS

The age group intended for these swift, easy-to-read adventures is said to be 6-10. I would put them at 6-7; only older if the child was having trouble with reading. Otherwise, there are way too many other distractions out there to expect these simple reads to hold attention spans. Even better would be to read these books to younger kids - I think 4-5 year old's would like them for their bedtime read-to-me's.

Jenkins is a cute little boy. I think Emily is the better of the two and should have been the star but then again, I was not the writer.
