ABOUT THE SERIES

Bubbles O'Seven is an agent with MI7.

Ut is important to note straight-off that O'Seven is an ape. I am not trying to backhandedly case aspersions on the fellow. He is an actual primate; a bonobo which is a very close cousin to the chimpanzee [most commonly found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo - you're welcome] and is part of the Great Ape collection. In the normal world, bonobos are quite intelligent but they do not tend to wear human close or smoke a pipe or carry on conversations in English; Bubbles O'Seven does.

O'Seven has this capability because of a scientific program conducted by the British Intelligence community. We are told how during WWII a not-so-well-known MI7 had existed specifically to counteract foreign propaganda and to do a bit of its own inside German-controlled lands. With the end of the War can the dissolution of the agency. Now many decades later, a couple of individuals who remember fondly this defunct department have a new idea making use of recent technology to alter the DNA of certain animals, especially Primates since they are so close to Humans genetically.

Unfortunately, "the attempt by the revived MI7 to create animals capable of "enemy" infiltration and spying on persons of interests on foreign soil who might pose a threat to national security", not to mention possible acting as saboteurs, "was a disaster. All the animals on the SpIWIT (Species Intelligence Weapon Integrated Taskforce) [pronounced Spirit] programme escaped, with the exception of one who chose to remain. Specimen 511, Bubbles O'Seven - considered the one success from the experimental procedure - is now in the employ of MI7, tasked with rounding up the rogue animal agents before they themselves do more harm than good".

Seeing that the animal, found in the genus Pan as are chimps, is historically referred to as 'pygmy chimpanzees', it is not surprising that O'Seven is not that tall of an individual; he stands around 4' at the most. O'Seven is partial to single-breasted gray suits, usually with vest, of course. He had deep black hair, actually most everywhere, a lot of which have more than a tinge of gray. While he may take to human clothing (and sports them a lot better than I do, I might add), he is not partial to footwear of any type.

He is fond of smoking a pipe. And he enjoys a "leaf green smoothie, blended - not crushed".

MY COMMENTS

The delicious stories about a talking non-human doing the sort of thing that legendary British agent 007 did does something that other parodies have not done. These others have all spoofed the spy genre quite amusingly, skewering the tropes with either other-the-top behavior or just had fun with it by using dogs or cats or ET's or such doing these things instead of a human male. Lancelot Link is closest to Bubbles O'Seven in that he, too, is a primate.

But where O'Seven really shines - and boy does it shine - is that Bubbles is not a cariacature. He is not silly or goofy or outlandish (well, other than the whole wearing clothes and smoking a pipe and such). He is a rather serious chap who has missions to do that he knows are important but he has to do them for people that he sometimes has issues with. And he happens to be a bonobo.

The writing is terrific! The artwork is stunning. This is a series that needs to be revised so that people can see just how well it was executed.
