Jonas Flynt is an agent with the Company of Rogues.
The time for these adventures of Flynt starts in 1714 with the death at 49 of the reigning Queen Anne of England. According to what we are told at the beginning of the first recorded adventure, the imminent passing of the monarch was joined by a hurried search for a document which might well change the future for the United Kingdom. Leading that search was Colonel Nathaniel Charters, a well-respected military leader who had lost an arm in battle but still served tirelessly on behalf of his country. In that regard, Charters had created an unofficial organization of men and women to act as his eyes and ears around the nation and abroad, providing much needed intelligence to the Throne and those who stood behind it. "Charters sat at the centre of a web of informers and operatives - the Company of Rogues - like a black spider hungry for information."
"Charters chose his recruits with care. Rogues they were, of all genders, religions, political beliefs, but each had that little something extra. It was not enough that they were larcenous or capable of violence. They had to have a quality that even Charters found indefinable and yet he was able to recognise it when he saw it. Call it a sense of honour or duty, call it an innate decency, call it trustworthiness."
"Charters' Company of Rogues had a very broad brief. Their remit was to protect the security of the nation, but crime also threatened that security and often went hand in glove with England's enemies."
Jonas Flynt is one of those Rogues, a man who had left his beloved Scotland around the age of 15 in search of adventure such as he had heard at his sea-faring father's knew and read about in the many books his aunt had made sure resided next to his bed in the evening. Now in his mid-30s, his Scottish brogue is discernable to those listening for it but he can if needed subdue it and be taken for an Englishman.
In his earlier travels he had been a soldier in the Royal Army and now is often addressed as Captain though he claims the rank is "honorary" so that matter is somewhat in doubt. Having left the military, Flynt had a period where he was known to come into possession of things not legally his so Flynt has become very familiar with other thieves and with fences that are more reliable than others. This is how Flynt came into contact with Colonel Charters and became one of his best agents.
He likes to carry two pistols secreted in special pockets of his overcoat, said weapons having been named by him Tact and Diplomacy. His sharp wit and quick mind and glib tongue are often sufficient to keep the need of pulling those weapons out to a minimum but there is never a doubt that he would do so when provoked.
Good Lines:
- In response to his boss's comment about being Flynt's superior, Flynt retorts, "As for you being my superior, you issue orders and that is all."
- Regarding the sometimes underhanded actions of the rich and powerful, Flynt opines, "the sense of entitlement of those in high places often led to low behavior".
