ABOUT THE SERIES

Elizabeth and Philip Jennings are agents of the KGB.

The fact that their adventures are under the title of 'The Americans' is the result of their being placed in the United States to pose as normal citizens while conducting espionage, sabotage, and even assassination as needed on behalf of the Soviet Union's key intelligence agency. As a tag line so wonderfully puts it, they are "the perfect American family ... of Soviet spies".

The time period is the mid-1980s. To perform the tasks they know will be given them, the couple, along with their children, Paige and Henry, live in a suburb of the nation's capitol. Both are employed at a small travel agency which gives them ample reason to be gone for short periods as well as maintain contact with a variety of people in and out of government.

Elizabeth was born in 1940 in Smolensk. Her name was Nadezhda Borisovna Popova. Her father was killed during WWII, supposedly a deserter despised by her patriotic mother. When she was 16 she was approached by the KGB and within a year she had completed initial training and was an operative. Her real training would come a couple years later when, in 1960, she was brought into Directorate S to learn how to be a covert Soviet agent living in plain sight as an American. In 1962 she was teamed with Philip to begin their extensive lessons in how to pose as a married couple in the States.

Philip was born Mikhail Andreiovich Petrov in Tobolsk in 1942. Also raised by a single mother, his childhood was tough as they had little on which to live. To help survive, he would walk from his country home into the city for provisions; such trips got him constantly bullied and beaten by young city gangs. When he was just ten, he killed a member in self-defense. He was recruited into the KGB at age 17 and would soon be moved into Directorate S and joined up with Elizabeth.

The two moved to the States in 1965 and established their covers as a normal married couple. They even conceived two children, Paige in 1967 and Henry in 1971.

The recorded activities that we follow of this family begins in 1985.

MY COMMENTS

I was a failure to the spy-fi fandom when this series came out because at the time I was not in the mood to watch bad guys at work as the heroes. This was even after I read rave reviews about it. Nope, not for me. Not yet.

Oh, thank goodness for binge watching. It allows a dodo like me to make up for lost time. Doesn't help the cast and crew with their ratings but then again I have a history for dooming new television series by liking it so, you're welcome, Keri Russell.
