Joe Dempsey is an agent with the ISB.
Michael Devlin is a successful barrister in London.
Sarah Truman is a reporter for CNN.
[Note: the author and the publishers have linked the adventures these three will share under the umbrella name of 'Dempsey/Devin' with no mention of Truman but she is, IMHO, important enough to warrant marquee appearance. I have kept, for convenience sake, their designation though I did modify it a tad.]
The three are not partners; they do not even know of each other when we first meet them. They will, in the course of that first adventure, meet and become life-long friends. In the case of Devlin and Truman, it will lead to an even more intimate relationship, resulting in twin sons who will have as their godfather the extremely capable (and deadly) Dempsey.
The author was kind enough to provide the following descriptions of the three people:

Sarah Truman: A London-based, Boston-born television journalist, Sarah ran away from a life as privileged as Michael's was violent. Determined to succeed in her career far away from her family's influence, Sarah's habit of forcing her way too deep into her own stories is what first brought her into contact with Michael and, together, they navigate the dangerous waters in which they frequently find themselves.
Another person who enters the picture in the third adventure and plays a major part there and in the fourth is: Eden Grace: A former member of The US Secret Service's Presidential Protective Division, Eden Grace is the newest recruit to Dempsey's International Security Bureau and his closest friend on the team. Practical, pragmatic and capable of lethal action when required, Grace is perfectly suited to her new career and the ideal foil for the more intense Dempsey.
