ABOUT THE SERIES

Ursula Blanchard is an agent for the British Queen.

That would be Queen Elizabeth I, with Blanchard coming into her service in the second year of the then young monarch's reign. The year is 1560.

Blanchard herself is 26 years old when she is brought to work at Richmond Palace on the Thames River. Her new position is that of a Lady of the Presence Chamber, a position of some note though not quite as intimate as would have been a Lady of the Privy Chamber. Still, it paid £30 a year which was needed to pay for the daily expenses of her infant daughter Meg and the nanny living in London.

We are told early on that Blanchard "was quite used to fine houses. I had been brought up in a manor house, and with Gerald I had been part of the entourage of Sir Thomas Gresham, financier, whose way of life, divided between London and Antwerp, verged on the princely." So while living in the Palace was definitely a step up in grandeur, it was not a huge leap.

Blanchard's need for her new position and its stipend was due to the recent death from smallpox of her beloved husband Gerald. He had been a man of note but not with much in the way of inheritance, which provided the reason for his having worked in "secret work" for the Queen's financier, Sir Thomas Gresham. Blanchard had proven to be of considerable use to her husband in that employment and had learned a good deal from him in return. While Gerald lived, their lifestyle was more than pleasant; with his death, she was without means and being of much lower birth, she had nothing to fall back on except the generosity of the offer of her new position.

It will be because of the work she did with Gerald that she will find, working now for the Queen, herself asked to assist in matters far outside the norm for a Lady of the Presence Chamber. Gresham had been involved in all sorts of 'activities' to provide money from foreign lands and banks on behalf of his Queen and most of that was clandestine and best not mentioned. Blanchard learned well and her new skillset will be called upon by the Queen on many occasions.

MY COMMENTS

I adore this series. I say that upfront to make sure there are no misunderstandings. One of the biggest downsides of researching and reading so many different series is that there is seldom enough time to spend with any series that has a sizeable amount of adventures to them. Such is the sad case with those of Ursula Blanchard - there are a lot of terrific tales in this series and not enough time to enjoy all of them.

But trust me when I say I am doing the best that I can. The reason is simple- these are really, really good. The plots are fascinating, the time-period wonderfully presented, and the characters captivating, especially Ursula. Such a pleasure to read.
