ABOUT THE SERIES

Jane Browne is an agent with the Knight Agency.

Learning exactly what the Knight Agency is can prove to be an interesting project. Throughout the good number of adventures we have in which to follow Browne, we get numerous references to the Knight Agency but very little in explanation as to what exactly it is. "We are the thin red line which separates order from chaos." That is a line from a blurb somewhat briefing us on the organization, followed by "For a thousand years, the Knight Agency has secretly kept watch, protecting mankind and society from innumerable threats". That sounds rather ominous though the indication from that statement that these are the good guys is borne out by their actions in striving to help and protect a society that does not know the group exists.

Browne, nicknamed the Ice Queen because "my blood goes cold in a crisis and I kill without remorse", is an experienced operative with the Agency having been with them for several years and already with an impressive number of successful missions on her record. She feels totally at home with the organization and treats several of its members as her closest friends, especially Steven, her mentor and handler. As she admits to him concerning her attitude, "I knew even before you came to pick me up that I would never be able to live a normal life. Without the Knight Agency, I would have turned into a criminal sooner or later ... running away from the who-knows-how-many foster homes, turning to crime to survive ... and for the thrill."

Now that excitement need is satisfied seemingly daily with either very dangerous assignments putting her regularly into harm's way or with the rigid exercise regimen she keeps in order to make sure her body is in the best condition it can be. She also has to keep up the constant training because her personal life is an interesting one on its own; one filled with a fair amount of partying and late nights.

As indicated, Browne is the product of the foster system as she is an orphan who apparently never knew her parents; even her name is one given her when it seemed Jane Doe was not a good one to keep.  When she was discovered by her recruiter and trainer, Steven, she was given the name of Browne. Once she showed she was going to live up to the expectations of Steven and the Agency, she was given this new identity which came with it the legend that she was a well-to-do heiress complete with a doting Uncle who kept her well supplied with needed funds and a frequently ailing Aunt who gave her regular excuses to duck out of social engagements when a mission demands.

The Knight Agency is headed by Sir Howard Blythe. It is divided into four distinct Branches, each of which is controlled by a titled man. It appears that Branch One deals in strong arm work and elimination. Branch Two is involved with infiltration, breaking and entering and whatever is needed after entry is made. Branch Three is data analysis and forensic accounting. Branch Four is the tech gurus, handling everything from cars to computers to nifty gadgets.

Jane Browne is assigned to Branch Two as she is so good at working her way into almost any clique but as she has shown on more than a few occasions, she could easily have fit into Branch One anytime she chose.

MY COMMENTS

I reckon you have to wonder if it is possible to warm to any character who is called by her friends the 'Ice Queen'. It makes her sound like she is not friendly which is definitely not the case - just that she can kill as needed without hesitation. This would be a good companion to have if you are expecting trouble but not one to irk.

I have never really taken to the idea of a super old organization remaining in the shadows for hundreds of years but, hey, just go with! Browne is worth the suspension of disbelief.

One highly unusual twist in this series is the existence of a few adventures taking place in an alternate universe. That was a new one for me!
