ABOUT THE SERIES

Anthony Smith is an agent with Interpol.

Billed in blurbs at the time these adventures were being aired as "the mightiest international police force of this or any other time", Interpol is depicted as having a "long arm" which "reaches across five continents". It is said in an introduction that its full name was "The International Criminal Police Organization" and was "a network uniting 63 nations against crime and this is an episode of the Man From Interpol".

Working largely alone or with representatives of the local law enforcement organizations in whichever country he might be sent for that particular case, Smith is a handsome dark-haired (combed straight back) man in his mid-to-late 30s. He is invariably seen well dressed in a suit and tie and wearing a knee-length tan trenchcoat (no hat) with an upturned collar.

His cases/assignments will take him to numerous countries. Some of them will involve crimes or mysteries that do not fit into the criteria for this compendium but enough do that he belongs here; smuggling, secret stealing, VIP kidnapping, assassination - all of which involve movement between countries - these are the sort of missions that Smith is brought in to handle.

In more than half of the cases we follow Smith investigating, he will have been sent there by a Superintendent Mercer, an older, more somber man, who definitely comes across as Smith's supervisor. This could be the case with Mercer also working for Interpol or Mercer could just be having a good rapport with Smith and taking a customary leadership position.

Smith can be a man of action when the situation demands, using his fists and firearms as required, but he far prefers to use tact and diplomacy.

This is definitely a cross-ocean operation in that the creators were two American brothers who also worked a good deal in England. They produced this 39-episode crime/pseudo-spy series in England and aired it there and in the States.

The star of the show was Richard Shapley who acted for a time under that name and for some time under the stage name of Richard Wyler.

Note: there is some discrepancy as to the exact order and times of airing. Since each episode was stand-alone, it is not that big of a deal.

MY COMMENTS

Since each time I see reference to this television series from 1960 it is considered a spy series even though it looked to me like it was a crime drama, I took my time researching it. Eventually, I decided, well, obviously, that it did belong. Despite Interpol having really nothing in actuality to do with dealing with spies - at least as far as I could find out - the episodes deal a lot with spy hunting and catching and some actually doing it. That's good enough for me to welcome Anthony Smith, the Man From Interpol, into the compendium.
