Jaime Sommers is an agent with the Berkut Group.
That corporation is referred to as a "quasi-governmental organization" which has considerable resources and even greater amount of responsibility. It is this group that "rebuilt" Sommers after a semi-trailer t-boned the vehicle she was a passenger in and very nearly killed her, destroying much of her body. The group did not perform this rescue out of the goodness of its corporate heart - it did not actually authorize it at all. The genius surgeon, and professor, who provides the technological breakthroughs that the Group enjoys had been dating the 23-year-old woman at the time of the accident and it was he that decided he would risk anything to save her.
[Small point on the genius mentioned above. He definitely is but the true genius and inventor of the technology was his evil and pretty much insane father who breaks out of prison to cause trouble.]
Bledsoe, the man that Sommers will eventually come to work for at the Group, describes it as "a private clandestine group dedicated to stopping rogue organizations from ending civilization as we know it". He adds, "I can make this simple for you. I could use your help. Are you in or are you out?" Sommers' reaction was interesting; she stared for a moment, chuckled, replied, "I'm definitely out", and then headed to a toilet to throw up.
Sommers, when we meet her for the first time, is a bartender at a loud, popular hangout for folks her age, making her have to work behind the counter instead of enjoying herself.
She might have been a student at Harvard, where she had been accepted largely due to her quite impressive IQ, but she took over the raising of her teenage sister when her mother died and her father 'dumped' the younger Sommers on the doorstep of the elder sister.
Her one positive spot in her life was her relationship with her boyfriend, Anthros, mentioned above and that got a tad trickier when their intimacy resulted in her getting pregnant. He had just proposed while they were traveling in the car when the accident happened and she lost the baby and most of her extremities.
After the reconstruction, which she was too out of it to agree it, she is understandably dismayed to learn parts of her were no longer parts of her but she recovers emotionally as well as physically fairly quickly. When her boyfriend is murdered shortly after, she reluctantly agrees to work with Berkut, on her terms.
This is even after she learns that there is another Bionic Woman out there, named Sara, who is having issues with her own equipment and is a tad unhinged as a result. The two women will meet on several occasions and their relationship will be 'unique'.
Good Line:
When her future boss first introduces himself to Sommers, in response to her question as to who he was, he responds, "You have $50 millions dollars worth of my property inside you so I guess you could say I'm your landlord".
When letting her know that she would have to work for the Group to repay for saving her life and for the technology she now possesses, he tells her "sooner or later you're going to have to make a choice. It goes something like this - heads you lose, tails you die. Welcome to the game."
After Bledsoe insists that Sommers come work for him since she has that $50 million dollars of hardware inside her, she counter-offers, "What if I pay you $20 a month?"
