Full Name: John Levis
Nationality: American
Organization: CIA
Occupation Agent

Creator: J. Thomas Nicholson
Time Span: 2013 - 2014

John Levis is an agent with the CIA.

Actually, no, but in reality, yes. He is truth a member of Viper, a five-man team created at the request of the CIA Director, 'Bear' Houghton, and funded by one of the several secret fiscal programs hidden in the massive budget of the Agency. The time is the early 70's and war in Vietnam is going very badly and the Soviet Union seems to be winning the propaganda battle and Red China is huge looming threat and the Middle East is heating faster and faster. The Director felt he needed an edge.

Viper was created anonymously so it could operate the same. No one outside the group except the Director knew how it was created or why. No one was ever supposed to know and the leader of the group, Dave Matthews, made sure that each person on the team knew as well; get caught and no one will come to the rescue.

The newest member of that small group was Levis. He was chosen by Matthews because of his incredible potential and his ruthless approach to any objective. "Levis was becoming an army trained killer, but Matthews would make Levis a world class clandestine assassin for the United States."

Levis is 19 years old when we first meet him. He is average (5'8) in height and a lean 154 pounds. "He was not a big man, but he was fierce. He had dark brown hair and brown eyes, and the skin color that would allow him to pass for multiple races, and yet not standout in the dominate white community that he grew up in." "His father's side was likely English but this mother's side contained an Indian blood line that descended down from the Dakota Sioux of Minnesota...And even though John was not full-blooded, his Indian roots ran deep inside his psyche. He was a modern day Dakota warrior even if others around him did not recognize that fact."

The year is 1972. In Munich, Black September has just massacred eight Israeli athletes. The Director of the CIA is livid and determined that America strike a blow against terrorism. He pulls from the highly trained Viper team a new member, John Levis, and tells this descendent of the Dakota Sioux to do just that - strike and strike hard.

2 Hidden Asset Hidden Asset
Written by J. Thomas Nicholson
Copyright: 2014

The year is 1974. In Iran, the much hated and feared Shah is pushing more and more young people to the side of the Ayatollah. The President of the United States is worried about losing the arms race and wants to increase nuclear testing. The Ayatollah wants to get his hands on a nuclear bomb and use it to strike at the Shah's protector, America. The CIA Director knows there is little he can do to stop his boss but going up against the Muslim leader and his plans, that's something else again, especially with a weapon like John Levis to use.

It was a shame this series only ran two books because it had some potential with the main character. I especially liked the way that John Levis is not a very experienced young man when he is pulled into the CIA and while he knows he is handling himself alright for the most part, he does wonder what he had done to get noticed and be offered the job. He does not truly get what made him so special.

The second book had a bit (well, lot) of revisionist history in it that was annoying AND fascinating at the same time. The Ayatollah Khomeini played really big role at a time when he really didn't so I am reading it going "no way" except part of me was actually musing "hmmmm".

Like I said, a shame there were not more.
