Following retirement from a portfolio career that included working in the Icelandic fishing industry, several years in the UK motor trade, over twelve years serving with the Royal Naval Reserve and two years as a mature student studying management at Hertfordshire University. After graduating he spent the next fifteen years in various management posts with a major local authority in southeast England.
