The date is October 1940. Violet is a high school student in Long Beach, CA but more importantly to this tale she is a waitress at a diner to help support her parents and herself. A stranger in a fedora has only a $20 bill to pay for his 35ยข meal and tells her to keep the change but she is worried that is not proper. She becomes more concerned when he is found murdered in the alley behind the diner the next day. She wants to tell someone but no one is interested, not the police detectives nor the newspaper reporter. More interestingly, she is told to stop talking about it altogether, and that's from the Federal Government.
