In Scotland to attend a special book auction being held at Castle Ardsmuir, Cotton Malone goes into action when the prize of the sale, an old grimoire, goes missing. An altercation with a Russian results in Malone being made unconscious out on the moor near a cluster of large stones. Upon awakening, Malone finds himself in the year 1755 where he will meet a Scot by the name of Jamie Fraser.
