Cannon is given a desk job back in D.C. The lovely Elena, formerly secretary to the Chief and a woman in love with Cannon, is briefly his Girl Friday before she is transferred to Department 'A' which is running a top secret project called 'Alpha', a "radically refined, super guidance control computer". Enemy spies want the lowdown on it and they plan to 'tap her mind' to get the intel. Since Cannon had recently dated her and still had feelings for her, he was not in a good mood.
