Flying back from their latest adventure, Myra North, Jack Lane, and Dr. Wu are greeted by a cadre of military aircraft who prompt them to land. The man in charge has an urgent message for Wu from a Professor Luna who is engaged in "some revolutionary power experiments [for America] in Cuba". His work is being threatened by a "mysterious tropical malady" which Wu says shows "hostile forces at work". The Professor's experiments have to do with growing specialized vegetation that could replace coal as a major energy source, one that is renewable.
