The year is 1662.
Thomas Chaloner is an ex-spy out of a job when he is recommended to Lord Clarendon with the promise that he continue to report to his old boss, John Thurloe. Then Chaloner learns the last one in that position was murdered in Whitehall. While trying to investigate, Chaloner is also ordered to :"the Tower to unearth the gold buried by the last Governor".
