ABOUT THE SERIES

The Red Fox Files is a codename for the trio of operatives working for MI5.

Initially it was just 'Red Fox' assigned to Jack McFadden, formerly Mikhail Raspopov, but when he is joined in his activities by Alena Zaslavsky and Ron Jacobs, the name was extended to include them. The formerly part above is important to the history and reason for the existance of the Red Fox Team (another term sometimes used for them).

Mikhail Raspopov was a former intelligence officer for Russia's FSB before he grew disenchanted with the growing corruption of his organization. He had hailed from a small community outside this sphere of influence and had learned a trade as a blacksmith, including other handy-man skills as a young boy. He wanted more out of his life, or so he thought, so at 18 he left for Moscow and was quickly scouted and hired by the FSB. He served there for over half a decade but when he married his love, Yelena, and she soon bore them a daughter, he knew he needed a change.

That took them to St. Petersburg and their joy at finding he could just afford to open his own shop. Life was good. Then two old associates came to pressure him into helping with a secret 'job', saying that his business had really been financed by the FSB and they wanted the occasional assistance from him. Well, they promised a one-and-done but he knew better. Unfortunately, when he tried to put an end to what turned out to be very illegal activities, they struck out, Yelena lost her life, their baby was sent to live with his grandmother, and Raspopov was forced to flee to England.

There his life will undergo a few drastic changes, the story of which is fascinating. The recruitment by MI5 and his designation as Red Fox would come later and the team later still.

Alena Zaslavsky is a Russian heiress, which will make her a strange addition to the group except for the fact that her father had moved to the UK when she was quite young so she was as British as could be, as well as having citizenship.

Ron Jacobs is a Black man from the Caribbean, a British citizen. He has been an officer with MI5 for over a decade and is the man who first approaches Raspopov to work for the organization.

How the three became a team and how Mikhail Raspopov because Jack McFadden, that's the main emphasis of the first adventure.

MY COMMENTS

I was fascinated with the first adventure and the fact that there is not a lot happening .. really ever .. and yet!! I was hooked on Raspopov's life story and the major of the book dealing with him just sort of .. waiting? It was low-keyed all the way but still very mesmerizing.

The series changes a bit with the subsequent two adventures but the writer, R.P. Thompson, was still able to hold my attention. I felt from the beginning that Raspopov/McFadden was my friend and that attitude never changed as the third story finished.
