ABOUT THE SERIES

James Tont is an agent with the British Secret Service.

His code name is ... wait for it ... 007 ... and a half.

Yep, 007½. Subtle, no?

Not so subtle, though, is apparently his name. 'Tont' is really short for 'Tonto' which is Italian for 'dumb'. Coincidence? Well, once you watch him in action for more than a couple of minutes, the matter will resolve itself.

This operative is extra special, though. We learn that in addition to being one of the world's most famous secret agent - is it just me or does the phrase 'famous secret agent' bring on an oxymoronic fever - has other skills. And I am not talking about his near supernatural ability to seduce any woman he makes a play for - being an operative like Tont, that is pretty much expected. No, I am talking about, for one thing, his apparently being a skilled surgeon.  We know this because he needs to remove microfilm from inside a person and he does so without harming the carrier. Pretty impressive.

Tont is around 6' tall and possess a slim, athletic build. His moderately handsome face is centered with an aquiline nose. He is closer in appearance to the Bond in OHMSS than the fellow before and definitely not as handsome as the one who would soon follow. One thing different about Tont than his colleague is Tont's face is constantly reflecting in abundance his emotion. If he is feeling amorous, his face practically shimmers and if he is annoyed, his face crinkles up as he tries to maintain control. He is very quick to laugh but just as swift to return to neutral.

As all good government agents, Tont has a theme song which is presented before we meet him in the first recorded adventure as well as in trailers for this story. It is remarkable in its line, sung by a woman trying to produce a Shirley Bassey vibe, singing to Tont that "You are my magnificent spy ... the man I like ... for the rest of my life". It is what most men are seeking, a woman to fall completely in like with him.

MOVIES

Number of Movies:2
First Appearance:1965
Last Appearance:1966

The first thing to remember with any Eurospy movie is that they were done to cash in on the phenomenal success of the James Bond franchise which by 1965 has produced 4 terrific movies which are still watched today.

Most of these movies came as close as they could without crossing any legal line, trying to take the place of 007. In the case of James Tont, well, the producer/creator team didn't worry about no stinking line. They did not claim their main character was 007, they bumped his codename up a half step, making him 007½. Then they had the gall to state that Tont was on hand because "James Bond, 007" was not available. They didn't just employ some euphemism like "that other guy" and go wink-wink; they named the fellow straight out.

I have no idea how successful the movies were before they were pulled but the two creators did make their names known. And then they, the very next year after they were publicly enjoined from making a third one, decided to rip off Our Man Flint. I haven't watched that one yer.

MY COMMENTS

These two very, very silly parodies of the spy genre are, as is usually the case with blatant spoofs, way over the top. Part of the time that is quite amusing but mostly it is, well, silly. I could not help but think, though, that the lead actor was having a blast in his role. He got to act dashing at times, goofy at times, and he obviously relished his Lothario moments. That man's hands when holding any woman were quite active.

Watching these on the web with English subtitles (I read they were also dubbed into English but I could not find either of those), I discovered I could "enjoy" them in small doses of 10-15 minutes tops. Like a very rich pastry. Best in small amounts.

But at no time would I ever recommend these movies to, well, anyone.
