ABOUT THE SERIES

Damien Wynter is an agent with Majic-12.

We are told not too far into the set of adventures that Majic-12 as it is called by its members and Majestic-12 as it is more formally called is "a black ops organization set up in 1947 by then President Truman to investigate UFOs and alien encounters and to obtain alien technology and prevent it from falling into the wrong hands." Adding to that is "Over the years some of the most important scientists, industrialists and military leaders had sat on the committee. Its mandate was to collect, analyze and re-engineer extraterrestrial technology; to safeguard the United States from security threats internal, abroad or from space involving aliens or alien technology. At times, it was necessary to intimidate witnesses and collect evidence.  And though it worked in conjunction and proxied with various military, intelligence, government research, and development agencies, at times more discretion was needed. Sometimes a more direct hand was needed, and for that, Majic-12 had its own intelligence section of agents."

Wynter comes to this organization from his time in the U.S. Army as part of its Special Forces. It was while investigating a set of caves in the Middle East that his outfit would come across buried deep underground an alien spacecraft. When the proper authorities (i.e., Majic-12 operatives) arrive to take over the matter, their man in charge approaches Wynter with the invitation to join the team.

It seems that Majic-12 was already aware of Wynter and interested in him. "Your family has a history with the unknown," Wynter is told. "You had a relative at Roanoke. Your grandfather was on the USS Eldridge. Your father encountered a UFO while at sea." The operative would add that the "at one time civilizations on earth reached quite a technological height. They rebelled against their alien originators. Conflict rose and civilizations were destroyed. But there are remnants, which our department seeks and preserves, along with more recent other world discoveries, hopeful for a greater war that will not come."

It is all kept as hush-hush as possible because "the truth is that we are not alone in the universe [but] unfortunately, the rest of humanity is not ready for the truth. It would rip the very core of our society to pieces. And so we work in secret." When Wynter is offered the job, he did not hesitate.

Damien Wynter has a sense of humor shown by the fact that his phone's ringtone is theme from The Man From U.N.C.L.E. On the other hand, we are told that "Wynter could be a real pain in the ass. Damien Wynter had no patience for analytical work, but then he was a front-line agent". Luckily after a short time with Majic-12, he is partnered with the highly analytical and flat-out brilliant Michelle Martin and the two of them have a terrific team.

MY COMMENTS

This series is a pretty inventive and creative combination of spy-fi and sci-fi. We have highly trained and dedicated men and women working for an agency that does not exist and which demands on being kept quiet about, all fighting against very nasty things from ... other places.

The author has done a bang-up job of giving us a dynamic lead character - and shortly thereafter his equally terrific partner. And he has pitted him/them with some spooky and eerie and otherworldly opponents. What is not to like? And I do not think David Mannes is done with Wynter and Martin.
