ABOUT THE SERIES

Dez Limerick is a freelance agent.

Well, he kinda was. In his former line of work he is what is known as a 'Gatekeeper' and when he did it professionally, he was very, very good at it. One of the best. We get a couple of very interesting and even more exciting glimpses in his career where he shows just how good he was and why he was in such demand. Then he decides he has has enough and wants to leave his line of work for something a lot more fun and considerably less dangerous - a gig musician.

Desmond Aloysius Limerick "('Dez' to his friends and close personal enemies) is a man with a shadowy past, certain useful hard-won skills, and, if one digs deep enough, a reputation as a good man to have at your back. Now retired from his previous life, Dez is just a bloke with a winning smile, a bass guitar, and bullet wounds that paint a road map of past live."

Before he left his former life (okay, he never really leaves it but he does try), as mentioned above, he was known as a Gatekeeper. This highly specialized profession is hired to assist on covert, black-ops missions. He does not perform the missions himself; he facilitates others doing it. He is the one who finds the way into ... wherever the people need to get into. And he finds a way to keep it open until everyone of that group who can get back out. And then he shuts the 'door' in such a way as to help that group get away safely.

Once he does shuck his old life and heads to California to be able to sit in on various stage performances where a good bass player might be needed, Limerick would love to believe that his life of danger was over - though seeing as how he looks to always go out of his way to find trouble, that statement is suspect. And a couple of the things that he pokes his nose into turn out to be every bit as dangerous as before and just a qualifying for his membership in this compendium as his old work made him.

Limerick has a tattoo of the Roman god, Janus, guardian of "Beginnings an' gates. Transitions an''times. Duality an' doors. Passages an' endings".

MY COMMENTS

Yikes! I did not expect when I opened the first of the two books in the series (a third one is said to be coming as of this typing) that I would be so hooked so completely by this character and his adventures. I was grabbed in the first couple of paragraphs and finally released when I closed the second book.

The writing is terrific. The pacing fantastic. The characters are all fun - even some of the bad guys. And Dez Limerick is extra special. He is wickedly funny - well to himself and to me as well but sometimes not so much to those he is talking with. He is super good at his job and so darned cool and collected doing it. Kinda really implausible and totally fun at the same time.

I have watching the digital book shelves for the next one. Count me in as a first-day buyer!
