ABOUT THE SERIES

Secret Agent Men is an agency in New Zealand Intelligence.

Abbreviated frequently, especially on their logo and letterhead as S.A.M., the organization is, according to a blurb about them: "Set in suburban New Zealand, the serial follows the adventures of a team of Kiwi teenagers as they discover a surreal world where secret agents are battling an evil criminal organization that wants to rule the world. To make life even more difficult, our young Kiwi super spies must also come to terms with all the big teen issues. Issues like weird parents, crazy teachers and friendship problems. It's a quirky and off-beat series blending fantasy and comedy."

Leading this very unusual organization is a stern, no-nonsense woman known only as Number 1. She is likely in her early to mid 40s and the comment about stern is very much the truth as the young agents with their frequent attempts at humor and avoiding work find out repeatedly to their dismay.

Actually heading the contingent of teenage operatives, going out into the field and sharing the risk, is Number 8, a tall dark-haired experienced operative himself, likely 30-35 years of age, prone to wearing sunglasses as often as he can. He tries to maintain order and discipline but since he also enjoys a good laugh or lark, he is more facilitator than custodian.

Of the teen agents that make up S.A.M., first and foremost is Jack West. This dirty-blond-haired young man, likely around 14 years old, is without a doubt their most capable operative. He is also the one certainly prone to be found falling asleep at the drop of a hat; his grades and his social life are suffering quite a bit from the fact that West is a fellow who really enjoys a snooze but who is always being called upon to save the nation or the world from bad guys. Such things can mess up a good night's sleep.

Also there is Demo, a tall, thin youngster who strikes one as being a goth-to-be teen with an attitude who also seems quite at home with tech 'stuff'.

And then there are the very lovely and sure to break hearts Ziegler twins, Beth and Amy. They are as gutsy and agile as they are pretty.

A couple more members will leave or join as the time goes by but these are the main members.

Several sources on the web talk about there being two seasons of this New Zealand spy series designed for young adults. After that, data on the show is a tad sketchy even though there are a couple episodes available for streaming.

One big unknown is the number of episodes, exactly. According to the website www.greenstonetv.com, the company that produced the show, there were 26 of the 30-minute episodes created. Since they would certainly know best, I have listed that amount as such. However, what those episodes were titled and when they were initially aired is not so nicely stated, even by those producers.

Epguides.com lists 9 episodes in Season 1 and gives the titles and airdates for all. IMDB.com lists 6 of those as well.

For Season 2, Epguides only mentions 1 while IMDB has 13 those about half of those are title-less.

That leaves 4 unaccounted for and a good number of titles, airdates, and plots lacking.

MY COMMENTS

If I had been a teenager watching television back in 2004, I might have enjoyed the first couple of episodes but I think I would have tired of the main character's constant dozing. Better yet, I would have wanted to have these shows available when I was a tween or just reaching adolescence.

As it is, the plots were, understandably, ordinary and simple and the characters okay. This was fair juvenile entertainment but since it did not last all that long, I have to assume it did not hit right with its demographics.
