ABOUT THE SERIES

Chuck Bartowski is an agent with the CIA.

Or is it the NSA?

Actually, both and neither.

He is an employee of Buy More, a consumer-electronics chain store selling a wide assortment of electrical gadgets and appliances. He has been a worker there for some time since he was expelled from Stanford University because of a false accusation that he had cheated in one of his classes. Because of the stigma of the eviction, the unfairness of the action, and the destruction of his planned career trajectory, Bartowski's morale and his confidence are both extremely low. It does not help that in his job he is part of the experts referred to as the "Nerd Herd"; indeed, at the facility where he works in the Echo Park secion of Los Angeles, he is the supervisor, the head Nerd.

Add in the fact that he is forced for financial reasons to live with his sister and her husband (whom he calls 'Captain Awesome'), both of whom are doctors, he is quite near the bottom of the enthusiasm scale.

Then he receives an email from his former roommate in collage, Bryce Larkin, and like most of us, he opened it. And his life changed forever. I am not sure how technically it happened but when he pressed the button to look at it, he was fit with a spectacular transfer of information. Somehow his brain was hit with a download of the full contents of the 'Intersect', the supercomputer that was a joint creation of the CIA and NSA and held all the information and intelligence the two agencies had amassed.

Since the process also apparently destroyed the computer, Chuck's brain had now the only 'copy' of the data so until it could be reconstructed, Bartowski needed to be protected. Eventually the CIA chose highly qualified and experienced agent, Sarah Walker, while the NSA picked Major John Casey. Jurisdiction was an issue so the two were forced to work together.

To say that Bartowski was not happy with the situation would be an understatement. Chuck is not a big fan of danger. He has no love of heights, or guns, or fighting, or, well, a whole list of things that a field agent has to deal with. Add to that the fact that while Sarah Walker is very easy to like (or love, in the case of Chuck), John Casey is one very spooky fellow.

MY COMMENTS

I had a hoot of a time with Chuck. It was inevitable. Any reasonable heterosexual male of any age over puberty would be attracted to the lovely and sexy Sarah Walker; that's a given. But for me the 'fantasy' of a geek suddenly having the wherewithall to become a Bond-like agent, even a little bit, well, what's not to like for a computer nerd like I have been for decades.

The actors in this show were superb. Zachary Levi as Chuck was terrific. Yvonne Strahovski is not only lovely, she is a darned fine actor. I even like (well, sort of) Adam Baldwin as the big meany, Major Casey. The plots were innovative at times and familiar at times and usually a lot of fun. Best, for me, was the way that the characters advance over time was very important.

Well done to the team. I am sure too many years have passed but I, like a couple of million other fans, long for a movie.

YOUR OPINIONS

Bond meets Psych...Chuck is Shawn, Morgan is Gus, Sarah is Jewls, Casey is Lassiter (there''s a little bit of Lassiter in Tang, too). I think they even drive the same vehicle. The Nerd Herd wagon is Psych''s Blueberry.
