Mr. Niesewand was a reporter who was born in South Africa but was raised in white-controlled Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). His exposes against the Smith government there landed in trouble on several occasions, including a long stint in prison before he was deported.
In 1973 he was named International Journalist of the Year, an award he won yet again for reports from Beirute during the Lebanese civil war. He further won plaudits for his coverage of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
He was killed at the age of 38 while reporting from Afghanistan.
