An "old spy-chasing comrade" of Myra North and Dr. Wu, Captain Gunsen, asks for their help in solving a major difficulty. In Center City where factories involved in work "on a colossal new defense weapon" have had employees "dying like flies under the most mysterious circumstances". News reports refer to the unexplained cause as the "Blue Death", so named because the bodies have no signs of violence and no clues as to the cause except for a faint blue tinge to the skin.
