Inspector Pujol is an old friend who telexes Fireball to come immediately to the small French village of Agrigon where the whole town was wiped out in a horrific way; the flesh had been stripped from their bones. The only clue was an open manhole cover but the two men that the Inspector had sent in to investigate never came back.
