Full Name: Dan Dexter
Series Name: Dan Dexter - Secret Agent
Nationality: British
Organization: British Secret Service
Occupation Agent

Creator: Unknown
Time Span: 1960 - 1962

ABOUT THE SERIES

Dan Dexter is an agent with the British Secret Service.

The time of his activities, and he has a very large number of operatives, is the Second World War and the locale is the European Theater. Dexter spends all his time deep behind enemy lines taking on the German Army and the nefarious Gestapo. His main area of operation was Nazi-occupied France though he does find himself dispatched to other areas of Europe as the need arises.

In addition to the occasional missions of sabotage and prisoner rescue, Dexter's official role in France was the training and organization of members of the Resistance and he will work closely with numerous factions of that group over the several years he puts his life in danger.

"Dexter's profession was one that demanded the highest human standards in self-control, courage, and the ability to think and act swiftly in moments of danger." That is what we are told about him in the first recorded adventure. Unfortunately, throughout the more than six dozen adventures we have of Dexter, we learn very little more about the man beyond the fact that he proves over and again the reputation he has for being dependable, honest, fearless, and intelligent. Those last two are interesting in that with the former he will enter incredibly dangerous situations and with the latter he will not only come up with ways to succeed, he will also know when it is best to walk away.

Helping Dexter on most of his activities is Shrimp Fisher, described as a small, wiry man who was born in France of British parents. Shrimp "had lived nearly all his life in Paris, spoke French as fluently as his native tongue, and English with a French accent". He devotion to Dexter is strong but his dedication to fighting anything Nazi is even stronger, the result of his parents' murder at their hands.

NOVELLAS AND SHORT STORIES

Number of Stories:82
First Appearance:1960
Last Appearance:1962

The British publication Lion, which started in 1952, was nearly a decade old when it launched the Dan Dexter series of text adventures in the pages of that magazine which mostly consisted of graphic adventures of one series or another.

That weekly periodical had just completed three years of adventures about another British agent named Max Malone, written by Trevor Hugh. When for whatever reason his derring-do's came to an end, the very next week saw those of Dan Dexter enjoying the same space. This time, the penmanship of the character was unspecified and remains unknown to me.

While Dexter would only be around just over half as long as his predecessor, Dexter will still have 80+ exciting adventures to his name.

MY COMMENTS

Whoever wrote these Dexter stories did a darn good job, IMHO. He kept the tales short and sweet and yet managed to pack a lot of action and excitement and danger into each tale. He also was smart enough to keep the plot lines simple with no huge 'destroy-an-army' plan; Dexter knows the best way to operate is to nibble and bite here and there.

I believe the same writer is responsible for most if not all the tales. Of course, I could be wrong again. In any case, these are good adventures and worth reading a few, or a lot, of them.
