Jake Ramsey is an agent with Black Brick.
Black Brick was a highly classified and experimental program inside the American intelligence community. Jeff Beltran is the man running the operation which involved seeking out, recruiting, and then training and managing children with potential but who had suffered horrible losses. In the system, promising teenagers were courted and carefully screened to find those that could not only perform the kind of work this extremely off-the-books black-ops organization would want done, but would be willing to do it.
As part of his cover while working for Black Brick, Ramsey attends university as a student on "Kingstone Campus" (don't know where that is). There he uses the alias of Sam Chever.
The covert aspect of the work is such that while Beltran has the ability to intercede with local authorities if absolutely necessary, it is very much something not to be desired. Ramsey notes, "while we worked for the government, we didn't advertise our presence when local cops showed up. Our operation ran in a dark gray area, and it was best to keep out of an entanglement with law enforcement."
When we first meet Ramsey, he is working closely with fellow Black Brick operative Shannon, his partner who on campus acts the role of his girl friend to explain their frequent times together. Theirs is a fun give-and-get relationship. In one early incident, she informed him that "you're ugly, cute in a blockhead sort of way, but still ugly." She said it in a joking manner but from that comment we have to wonder if Ramsey might be a shade less than handsome, or that Shannon has a mean sense of humor.
